Voltas leads gainers in 'A' group

Dish TV India, Idea Cellular, Sterlite Industries (India) and JSW Steel are among the other gainers.

Voltas galloped 7.32% to Rs 115.15 and topped the gainers in the BSE's 'A' group. The stock rose on volume of 19.56 lakh shares, sharply higher than an average daily volume of 3.10 lakh shares in the past two weeks. The stock surged on reports air-conditioner manufacturers have grown at double-digit rate in the last couple of months as the extreme heat in the Northern and Eastern regions led to brisk sales. Voltas offers engineering solutions for a wide spectrum of industries in areas such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning, refrigeration, electro-mechanical projects, textile machinery, mining and construction equipment, materials handling equipment, water management & treatment, cold chain solutions, building management systems, and indoor air quality.

Dish TV India jumped 6.01% to Rs 68.80 and was second biggest gainer in 'A' group. The stock rose on volume of 10.99 lakh shares, higher than an average daily volume of 4.19 lakh shares in the past two weeks.

Idea Cellular surged 5.62% to Rs 86.50 and was third biggest gainer in 'A' group. The stock extended Tuesday's 5.41% gain, on reports these cellular services providers will continue to offer third-generation services on a pan-India basis. The telecom tribunal on Tuesday gave a split verdict in the 3G intra-circle roaming case implying that the company can continue offering third-generation services on a pan-India basis.

Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and the local unit of UK's Vodafone Group PLC in July 2011 signed agreements to provide 3G roaming services. In late December, the telecom department asked the companies to stop such services, saying they violated rules by signing the roaming agreements. Bharti, Idea and Vodafone India then went to the tribunal, which stayed the ban. Bharti has 3G bandwidth in 13 of India's 22 telecom service areas, while Idea has access in 11 and Vodafone India in nine.

TDSAT is a quasi-judicial body which decides on disputes in the telecom and media sectors.

Metal stocks gained on hopes of further monetary policy easing from China, the world's largest consumer of copper and aluminum. Sterlite Industries (India) advanced 5.27% to Rs 110.90 and was fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group.

JSW Steel gained 4.42% to Rs 725.45 and was fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group.
