MRPL leads gainers in 'A' group

Sun TV Network, Essar Oil, Gujarat Fluorochemicals and Idea Cellular are among the other gainers.

Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals (MRPL) galloped 8.36% to Rs 60.30 and topped the gainers in the BSE's 'A' group. The stock rose on volume of 7.46 lakh shares, higher than an average daily volume of 1.16 lakh shares in the past two weeks. A recent report indicated that MRPL and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) have shown expression of interest (EOI) in acquiring the shares of West Bengal's Haldia Petrochemicals (HPL).

Sun TV Network jumped 5.84% to Rs 323.35 and was second biggest gainer in 'A' group. The stock had outperformed the market over the past one month till 2 July 2012, surging 34.76% compared with the Sensex's 8.98% gain. The scrip also outperformed the market in past one quarter, falling 0.34% as against Sensex's fall of 0.45%.

Essar Oil surged 5.81% to Rs 59.20 and was third biggest gainer in 'A' group. Reportedly the core group of the CDR (Corporate Debt Restructuring) cell has approved the exit of Essar Oil from the forum in its meeting held on 29 June 2012. However, the lenders disagreed with the proposal of exit submitted by the cell. Accordingly, it is re-working the terms and conditions of the exit.

Gujarat Fluorochemicals advanced 5.53% to Rs 420.55 and was fourth biggest gainer in 'A' group. The stock rose on volume of 1.18 lakh shares, higher than an average daily volume of 9,040 shares in the past two weeks.

Idea Cellular gained 5.41% to Rs 81.90 and was fifth biggest gainer in 'A' group. The telecom stock rose after the telecom tribunal reportedly gave a split verdict today in the 3G intra-circle roaming case.

As per reports, the telecom tribunal Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) today gave a split verdict in a case by mobile phone operators that had challenged a government order requiring them to stop offering 3G services beyond their licensed zones through mutual roaming pacts. The tribunal has reportedly asked the operators to appeal at a higher court after the tribunal split its vote with one in favour of the government and the other in favour of the carriers.

The split verdict on 3G services roaming by TDSAT is likely to give relief to existing operators. This means that existing roaming services offered by telecom operators would not be switched off immediately. The verdict also means that the case could go for further appeal to higher courts.

In a 2010 government auction, Bharti Airtel won 3G bandwidth in 13 of the country's 22 service areas, while Idea Cellular gained access to 11 and Vodafone nine. The telecom ministry told carriers last December that it was illegal to offer 3G services beyond their allotted zones by mutually agreeing to share their airwaves after three carriers -- Bharti Airtel, Vodafone's Indian unit and Idea Cellular -- managed to offer 3G services in most parts of the country because of 3G pacts. Later, the three operators and smaller rivals Tata Teleservices and Aircel challenged the government order before the TDSAT.
